Maruti sales up 13 pc in May

Our Bureau

New Delhi , June 1

MARUTI Udyog Ltd saw its sales rise by 13 per cent in May to 44,212 units (including 6,171 units of exports), up from 39,186 units in the same month last year.

Sales of the company's bread-and-butter model, Maruti 800 however fell by awhopping 41 per cent to 10,016 units in the month.

According to a company statement, the growth in sales in May 2004 is over a relatively higher base, as sales in May 2003 were unusually high. ``Owing to a strike at one of our vendors, our production was adversely affected in April 2003. In addition, a transporters' strike in that month had also affected sales. A portion of the April demand had shifted to May 2003, leading to unusually high sales in that month,'' the statement said.

During May 2004, Maruti's volumes in the domestic compact car segment (Alto, Zen and WagonR) grew by 64 per cent and in the mid-size segment (Esteem) by 37 per cent.
