Farm credit Nabard urged to ease credit norms for ryots Our Bureau
Hyderabad , June 2 THE State Government has appealed to the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard) to take measures to relax norms, providing higher levels of credit to farmers through District Cooperative Central Banks. At a review meeting held here on Wednesday to discuss the plight of farmers, Mr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, the Chief Minister, made an appeal to Ms Ranjana Kumar, the Chairperson of Nabard, to increase credit flow to the agriculture sector in the State. The Chief Minister directed the officials to convene a special State Level Bankers Committee (SLBC) meeting on June 7 to discuss the crisis and to find ways to increase credit flow. The Nabard Chairperson is expected to take part in the meeting. Mr K. Rosaiah, Minister for Finance, Mr Kanna Lakshminarayana (Minister for Cooperation) and Mr Mohan Kanda, Chief Secretary, were present at the review meeting. Meanwhile, Mr N. Raghuveera Reddy, who took charge as Minister for Agriculture on Wednesday, said that the Government would take measures to stop farmers from taking the extreme step. "Despite taking several measures, farmers continued to commit suicide. A Cabinet Sub-Committee has been formed to discuss the woes of farmers," he said. He said the Government would give reply to the queries from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on suicides by farmers. "We will take note of Commission's advice in this regard," a Government statement quoting the Minister said.
