Hyderabad , June 4

TOP brass from the German automotive major, Volkswagen, currently in India exploring options to locate a greenfield car assembly line, on Friday met the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajashekara Reddy, and the Finance Minister, Mr K. Rosaiah. The German delegation was assured necessary support for the project, it is learnt. Senior officials from the Industries Ministry and the Andhra Pradesh Infrastructure Corporation also participated in the discussions.

Earlier this year, the State Government officials and former Chief Minister Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu had indicated that the automotive major had decided to locate base near Visakhapatnam. However, with elections, the project went into limbo.

The India project team leader, Dr Helmuth Schuster, along with team members of the carmaker in India, are holding talks with officials.

However, State Government officials are against making any comments on their visit or the status of talks.

It is learnt that Tamil Nadu, where both Hyundai and Ford plants are located, is also being considered by the company.

Late last year, the carmaker was shown a site near Visakhapatnam in the proposed special economic zone.
