THE Foreign Minister for Thailand, Dr Surakiart Sathirathai, has said that India and Thailand have the potential for enlarging their economic and trade ties. At a meeting with a delegation from the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the Thai Foreign Minister expressed hope that the free trade agreement (FTA) between India and Thailand would become effective at an early date and provide a platform for growth in business opportunities in both the countries.
In this context, the Dr Sathirathai wanted the Indian industry to view the FTA with Thailand as an opportunity for Indian industry. The rationale for this was that Thailand was entering into FTAs with China, Japan and Australia, apart from negotiations with the US.
Another area for cooperation identified by the Thai Foreign Minister was tourism. Dr Sathirathai said that India could ensure an appropriate civil aviation policy, which could facilitate easier and larger movement of cargo and passengers. He noted that the Asia cooperation dialogue provided an excellent platform for the Indian private sector to participate in programmes of cooperation in areas such as small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and ICT.
