Wipro facility soon in Kerala

Sankar Radhakrishnan

Thiruvananthapuram , June 10

THE information technology industry in Kerala is set to receive a boost with Wipro Ltd reported to be on the verge of starting operations in the State with a facility at the Infopark in Kochi.

The company will initially operate out of leased space within the existing building at the Infopark, but eventually move to its own campus within the park complex, a Government official told Business Line.

A formal announcement is expected in the next few weeks.

The company has already identified a 14-acre plot within the Infopark premises to build its own campus, the official said. Besides, the company has also expressed interest in leasing 50,000 sq ft of space in another building currently being constructed at the Infopark, he added.

According to the official, the Wipro facility in Kochi will focus on both IT and IT enabled services (ITES).

While the company is initially expected to employ around 100 people at its facility in Kochi, the number of employees is expected to touch 2,000 once the unit is fully operational, he said.

In August last year, Infosys Technologies had unveiled its plans to start operations at the Technopark in Thiruvananthapuram, while in September 2003, Sify Ltd had announced that it would set up a network operations centre at the Infopark in Kochi
