Hyderabad , June 19

THE Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, said that the Tata Group had agreed to help the handloom weavers in the State in production and marketing of value-added handloom apparel. The representatives of the group agreed to the State Government's proposal in this regard when the CM met them in Mumbai on Friday.

Briefing newspersons here on Saturday on his visit to Mumbai to attract investments into the State, the Chief Minister said he had asked the Reliance Group to set up a large scale manufacturing unit or a gas-based refinery and power plant in AP. He also wanted Reliance to foray into bio-diesel production.

Dr Reddy said he had explained to the captains of industry at a dinner meeting of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) that the State Government would extend all help, including provision of infrastructure, power and tax concessions, for setting up industries in AP. The partnership between the State and CII, forged during the previous TDP Government, would continue, he said.

Dr Reddy said the State Government would allot land to industries at "realistic" rates. The employment potential of the proposed industry will be kept in mind while fixing land prices. He would insist that the locals be given preference by industries while employing.

The Chief Minister also met the RBI Governor and Deputy Governor and explained to them the economic situation in the State and the plight of the farmers. He asked the RBI to enable the co-operative banks in the State to freeze repayment of existing loans and sanction new loans to farmers. He sought the RBI's help for reviving the Prudential and Vasavi urban co-operative banks.

Dr Reddy said Mr Mehul Choksi, the Chairman of Gitanjali Jewellers, which came forward to establish a gem and jewellery park in the State, had told him that the project would provide employment to 1 lakh people in two years.
