SS Music talent hunt in July

Nina Varghese

Chennai , June 20

SOUTHERN Spice Music is planning a number of new programmes, including a reality music talent hunt to identify fresh talent.

Mr B.D. Ramesh Babu, President, Southern Spice Music, said that the competition starting in the first week of July will be held in the four southern States and the channel will pick up five musicians who will be trained and an album of eight songs will be cut.

The audio and video support for this venture is by Sony with Fanta as the main sponsor, he said. The channel recently upgraded from the beta format to hard disk play outs.

Mr Ramesh Babu said that the programmes are stored on hard disk (in MPEG 2 format) and played out of the computers and both the audio-video output is digital. The investment for the upgradation was Rs 1.1 crore and was mainly from internal accruals, he said.

The channel will soon shift its uplink facility from Mumbai to Chennai.

Mr Ramesh Babu, quoting the latest TAM report, said that the channel share has gone up from 0.3 per cent to 0.5 per cent in last six weeks. The cumulative reach in the four southern States of SS Music was 15.99 per cent followed by MTV, which had 11.86 per cent in the week ending June 5. He said that the channel has been catering to the youth in the four southern States that were totally neglected by the other music channels until SS Music came along.

He said that recently MTV had expressed interest in acquiring the channel but a decision is yet to be taken on that issue.

The channel has stopped announcing lottery results from April 1 this year. Mr Ramesh Babu said the channel achieved break even with just advertising revenue.

The new programmes such as Connect are largely interactive where the audience can get in touch with the channel video conferencing through Sify Ltd.

Viewers' choice will be another programme which is expected to push viewership up, Mr Ramesh Babu said. This programme will be on air four days a week.
