Sugar Govt cuts sugar free sale quota Our Bureau
New Delhi , June 25 AFTER announcing huge free sale quota (FSQ) sugar allocations for mills during the April-June quarter, the Government has adopted a more conservative release policy for the coming three months. The total FSQ released for July-September - the aggregate quantity of sugar that mills can sell in the open market during the entire quarter - has been fixed at 38 lakh tonnes (lt), below the 46 lt that was allocated during the preceding quarter. Of this quantity, the month-wise allocations have been set at 13 lt for July, 12 lt for August and 13 lt for September, against 15 lt in April, 16 lt in May and 15 lt in June. Moreover, the validity period for delivery and despatch of the FSQ sugar of 15 lt released for June has been extended till July 15. The Government has also released a `levy quota' - sugar to be sold through the public distribution system - of 2.16 lt each for the coming three months, which takes the aggregate sugar available for domestic consumption during July-September 2004 to 44.48 lt. This is higher than the corresponding 35.51 lt of FSQ and levy sugar released for July-September 2003. "With enough stock in hand, the Government will not hesitate to release further quantities in case of need," an official statement said.
