K.V. Kurmanath

Somayajulapalle (Kurnool Dist), July 1

LENDING a helping hand to the kin of the farmers who committed suicides in the State, the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, today said the Union Government would provide employment to at least one in each of the families.

The Government would also give a grant of Rs 50,000 in addition to the Rs 1.50-lakh relief package announced by the State Government to the kin of those who committed suicide.

In his first visit out of the national capital after taking charge as Prime Minister, Dr Singh addressed a gathering near Somayajulapalle where he disbursed the relief package to the kin of the deceased farmers. Fifty-one farmers committed suicide in the district since July 1, 1998.

Dr Singh also announced a slew of sops to the village. They included sanction of Rs 1 crore to construct a tank to provide sustainable water to about 500 acres.

"The Union Government will construct 100 houses under Indira Awas Yojana at a cost of Rs 25 lakh," he said.

Besides sanctioning Rs 10-lakh drinking water project and Rs 20-lakh drainage scheme, the Prime Minister also announced that the Upper Primary School in the village would be upgraded to High School.

The Government would allocate Rs 10 lakh for the purpose.

Earlier, the Prime Minister held a review meeting where officials of the State Government explained to him about the grave drought situation and the measures initiated.

The Prime Minister was accompanied by the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, and Union Ministers, Mr S. Jaipal Reddy, Mr K. Chandrasekhara Rao and Ms Panabaka Lakshmi.
