Non-conventional Energy AP Govt to raise 20 crore Jatropha saplings Our Bureau
Hyderabad , July 5 AS a part of its effort to promote bio-diesel plantations, the Andhra Pradesh Government has decided to raise 20-crore saplings of Jatropha in its nurseries this year for distribution to farmers in eight drought prone districts. A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and the Agricultural Minister, Mr N. Raghuveera Reddy, with a three-member Tamil Nadu team that arrived here on Monday. The Tamil Nadu team comprised Dr Vadivelu, Head of the Horticulture Department, Coimbatore Agricultural University, Mr Nandagopal of Sagar Sugars, Chennai and Mr Natarjan, representing a non-government organisation engaged in the promotion of bio-diesel plantations. According to official sources, the Government had also decided to impart training to farmers and agricultural extension officers in jatropha cultivation for a period of two years. Experts from Tamil Nadu would conduct the training The State Government plans to promote these plantations in an extent of two lakh acres in the current year in the districts of Chittoor, Kadapa, Kurnool, Anantapur, Mahabubnagar, Nalgonda, Rangareddy and Medak. Already two bio-diesel processing plants are coming up at Kakinada and Zaheerabad and the Government is inviting entrepreneurs to set up some more plants with which buy-back arrangements would be established with the farmers.
