Wet spell to continue in Kerala

THE forecast of isolated heavy rain in Kerala will hold for July 17 (Saturday) too, with most places in the State and Lakshadweep recording rain on Friday. Outlook for the two subsequent days did not indicate any significant change.

On Friday, Thalassery recorded seven cm of rain, while Kasaragod, Kudulu and Kunnamkulam recorded six cm each and Karipur Airport, Kozhikode, Vadakara, Cochin International Airport and Minicoy five cm each.

According to the Agromet Bulletin dated July 15 issued by the Met Office, Thiruvananthapuram, seasonal (June 1 to July 14) rainfall was `normal' in Idukki, Kollam, Palakkad, Pathanamthitta and Thiruvananthapuram districts.

All the others - Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Kasaragod, Kannur, Kottayam, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Thrissur and Wayanad - recorded `deficient' rain. The chief amounts of rainfall recorded on three days from July 12 in cm are:

July 12: Vythiri - three; Munnar - two; and Thodupuzha, Devikolam, Idukki, Aryankavu, Kanjirappally, Ambalavayal and Kuppady - one each.

July 13: Chittur - three; Kasaragod, Kozhikode, Koilandy, Manjeri, Mananthavady and Kuppady - two each; and Haripad, Idukki, Kannur, Hosdurg, Kudulu, Vadakara, Nilambur, Karipur Airport, Mannarkad, Ottapalam, Alathur, Kannara and Ambalavayal - one each.

July 14: Munnar and Kodungallur - three each; Mavelikara, Kochi Airport, Aluva and Vadakkancherry - two each; and Cherthala, Perumbavoor, Kasaragod, Hosdurg, Kollam, Vadakara, Koilandy, Nilambur, Kollengode, Pattambi, Thiruvananthapuram Airport, Enamackel, Kannara and Mananthavady - one each.

Mean relative humidity varied between 63 per cent and 95 per cent in various districts, while mean cloud coverage between five okta and eight okta and mean wind speed, between two kmph and 10 kmph.

Stage and state of crops: Paddy crop is in the panicle initiation stage. Second weeding and top dressing operations have been completed.

Intercultural weeding operations and organic manure application continue in coconut, arecanut, rubber, spices, vegetables, banana, tapioca and cashew.

Pepper is in the spike initiation stage and plant protection and fertiliser application in semi-circular basins are in progress. New planting is being carried out with improved varieties in almost all crops in garden lands.
