Work on Nagarjuna Udupi plant to begin by year-end

WORK on the 1,015-MW thermal power plant of Nagarjuna Power Corporation Ltd (NPCL) is likely to begin at Padubidri in Udupi district by the end of this year.

The plant will comprise two units of 507.5 MW each; the first unit will be commissioned in 38 months after financial closure and the second four months after that. The General Manager (Technical), NPCL, Mr K.S. Balachandra, said all the statutory clearances required for the project have been obtained. The tariff of electricity from the project will be nearly Rs 2.10 in the first year of generation (that is 2008).

Coal, the primary fuel for the plant, will be sourced from Australia, South Africa and Indonesia through the Mangalore port and transported to the site by rail. Seawater will be desalinated to meet the project's water requirements, he added.
