Water Delhi water board calls for tariff rationalisation Our Bureau
New Delhi , July 19 POINTING out that water tariffs in Delhi are one of the lowest, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has called for tariff rationalisation. Water tariff in Delhi is at 35 paise per kilolitre (kl), whereas cities such as Bangalore and Chandigarh charge more from consumers, stated the DJB Chairman, Mr P.K. Tripathi. In Bangalore, consumers are charged Rs 140 per month for consumption of 25 kilolitre while Chandigarh charges Rs 67.5 for 25 kl from its consumers, he informed at a conference organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) on Monday at New Delhi. Tariff rationalisation would encourage consumers to conserve water. Mr Tripathi informed that with 670 million gallons per day (mgd) of water supply from the DJB, there are certain pockets in the city that do not get sufficient water to meet their daily needs whilst others get a good water supply. But there are no incentives for these consumers, who get a good water supply to conserve water. He also said that 140 mgd of water will be available from the water treatment plant at Sonia Vihar from August onwards and added that there is a proposal to enforce 100 per cent metering for domestic connections. Mr Anshuman Magazine, Chairman, Delhi State Council and Managing Director, CB Richard Ellis Pvt Ltd, called for penalising wastage of water and a strong anti-theft legislation. The DJB, meanwhile, has sought the industry's help in areas of manufacturing of water efficient devices such as auto level on-off switch or sensors, sensor taps, auto check valves, small size/dual system cisterns and called upon bulk consumers and industries to adopt water audits and rain water harvesting.
