Kerala planters condemn assault

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Association of Planters of Kerala (APK) has strongly condemned the incident in which the Manager of Moongalar Estate in Vandiperiyar in Idukki district was assaulted by a group of workmen on Saturday last.

Moongalar belongs to the Harrisons Malayalam group and is among the few estates that have been functioning in Peermade taluk, according to a statement issued by the Secretary of APK.

It was only as recently as the last two months that the estate had been facing industrial unrest instigated by some individuals.

It may be recalled that at least 15 estates are either lying closed or had been abandoned in the district.

According to the statement, the unlawful practice of plucking green leaves from the closed/abandoned estates for being sold in stealth with the connivance of misguided individuals had become public knowledge.

The APK demanded that the State Government and the police act proactively to book the culprits.
