Hard campaign against soft drink giants

Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam , July 22

ACTIVISTS belonging to a network called Stolen Generation and those from Plachimada villlage, Kerala, waging a battle against Coca-Cola have given a call to the public, the youth in particular, and the intelligentsia to realise the harm being caused by the soft drink giants and fight them.

At a press conference here on Thursday, they said commercialisation of vital community resources such as water should be opposed and in that context the battle being waged by the people of Plachimada against Coca-Cola should inspire public-spirited individuals and organisations.

Mr Chakradhar, of Stolen Generation, said the Government, which could not provide potable water to common people had no right to supply water to the soft drink giants that were exploiting the common people. "The youth in particular are falling prey to the high-powered advertising campaigns of the these companies. That is why we want to take the message of Plachimada to all corners of the country," he said.

Mr M. Thangavelu, a member of the Coca-Cola Virudha Samara Samiti, Plachimada, narrated the struggle of the people there against the company without the support of the political parties and how it had finally culminated in the cancellation of the licence of the plant by the local panchayat.

Ms Lakshmi, of the Jagruthi Mahila Sangham, said it was a matter of concern that youth were being carried away by the western lifestyles and soft drink consumption had become a statement of fashion.
