Foods & Food Processing Agri-Biz & Commodities - Standards & Benchmarks Exporters concern over new European food law Our Bureau
New Delhi , July 22 AFTER the US bio-terrorism law, Indian exporters are now dreading the European General Food Law, which comes into effect from January 1, 2005. According to a statement by EAN India (a non-profit organisation under the Ministry of Commerce), this law will threaten Indian food and marine product exports to the European Union (EU), which accounts for 40 per cent of the country's total food and marine products basket. The new law requires all food and feed manufacturers and suppliers to make their food products and ingredients traceable along the supply chain, EAN said. To enable Indian exporters in complying with the law, EAN Indian has introduced the traceability guidelines developed by leading food retailers and producers in the EU, covering different food segments such as meat, fresh fruits, vegetables and marine products. It said the guidelines provide guidance on adopting effective product traceability, product recall and crisis management process based on the universally accepted EAN.UCC system of identifying products, locations and standardised information exchange. "The European General Food Law is an attempt to achieve consumer and product safety and prevent food crisis like the ones that have happened in Europe during the past five years. Indian food exporters adhering to the new regulations and adopting international traceability systems will not only achieve continued success across the European markets but also gain global competitive advantage," the CEO of EAN India, Mr Ravi Mathur, said in the statement.
