Tackle drought, States urged

THE Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) has urged the State Governments to take up immediate steps to tackle the looming drought.
The retarding monsoons have pushed back the prospects of the agriculture sector with only 49 per cent of the districts in the country receiving normal or excess deficient rains by the middle of July.
However, the situation was not so bleak as the previous drought, as 20 of the 36 meteorological sub-divisions received normal or excess rains compared to 31 sub-divisions in 2003-04 and just 14 sub-divisions in 2002-03.
The major regions that were affected by the retarding monsoons were the West, with only 30 per cent of the districts getting normal or excess rainfall, North with only 39 per cent of the districts getting normal or excess rainfall, and the north-eastern region, where only 53 per cent of the districts received normal or excess rains.
In the southern region, 64 per cent of the districts received normal or excess rains, while in the eastern as many as 72 per cent of the districts had normal or excess rains. Trends in sown area of various crops till end June shows that rice, cotton, coarse cereals, sugarcane, oilseeds and pulses have been marginally affected even by the poor progress of the monsoons. The situation would have been aggravated by mid-July.
