More restrictions on penicillin imports

IMPORT of penicillin and its salts through the advance licence route has become more stringent, with the Government placing more restrictions on imports under this route.

The Government had in July 2003 allowed imports of approved and unapproved drugs under the advance licence scheme without the requirement of registration procedure under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act so long as certain specified conditions were met.

The Director-General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has now introduced more conditions (to the already existing ones) in respect of imports of penicillin and its salts (ITC HS Code 29411010) under the advance licence route.

Informed sources said that the latest set of conditions, including the ban of issue of advance licences for the next 30 days, comes at the behest of the domestic manufacturers of penicillin and its salts.
