CII seeks to clarify labour export issues with US

IN the backdrop of the US being India's largest single market for skilled labour exports, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) would like certain issues to be addressed including a transparent visa regime and a tax revenue sharing agreement to avoid double taxation.
With the US accounting for $4.5 billion remittances in 2003, CII felt that this "roughly corresponded to 21 per cent of reported cross-border services exports and around 7.5 per cent of India's total goods exports earning for the year."
Further, the skilled Indian workforce is not only in the information technology sector, but shows "greater diversity."
Indian presence in the US includes sectors such as laboratory research in natural sciences, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and applied technology like industrial design, among others.
Additionally, sectors like medical, legal, financial and education also employ large numbers of Indians.
Other issues that the chambers felt needed to be addressed included mutual recognition and certification for Indian and US professionals.
It also called attention to the issues of academic degrees and diplomas, mutually acceptable basis for contractual labour services and provision of special `economic' visa for contractual on-site work.
