German support for AP power distribution likely

Hyderabad , July 26

THE German Government, which has agreed to fund the expansion of 660 MW Vijayawada Thermal Power Station, has recently indicated its intent to provide financial assistance to support the power sector in Andhra Pradesh.

Disclosing these details at a high-level meeting, the Chairman and Managing Director of AP Transco, Ms Rachel Chatterjee, said that a detailed project report and proposals of European Institute for Energy Research (EifER), Germany, will be submitted by the State Government.

According to a statement from APTransco, this project has a long term perspective for the power sector with special emphasis on the distribution sector and its strengthening.

The implementation is likely to be taken up in two phases, with the first phase of planning, identification of projects and schemes and implementation of some pilot projects, followed by the project itself over the next eight years.

A nine-member German delegation, headed by Prof Dr Jean Claude van Duysen of EIfER, which participated in a two-day meeting, expressed willingness to take up a pilot project covering the Hyderabad region apart from Bangalore city that seeks to bring rapid improvements in the distribution network.
