Coonoor tea prices up

IMPROVEMENT in quality and demand from upcountry buyers helped the tea market to look up when 13.63 lakh kg were offered for sale at the auctions conducted by the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA).

The teas with better appearance and quality among the BP, BPS and fannings grades fetched even Rs 7 a kg more than last week.

But for this, the volume of the teas traded for Rs 60 and above would have been higher than the recorded level of 40,000 kg.

HLL bought dust grades at around Rs 38-40 a kg and these were mostly for Kenya markets. Teas were bought up to Rs 43 a kg for Kenyan market.

The buyers for Iraq lifted the suitable teas for Rs 36-38. Buyers for Pakistan market paid Rs 42. ``The exporters for Russia and Poland paid around Rs 34 a kg. But, those operating for CIS were active at Rs 35,'' said an auctioneer.

``The best Nilgiri orthodox brokens and fannings fetched Rs 3 a kg more than last week. Good liquoring CTC brokens were dearer by Rs 2. Clean black leaf CTC brokens were higher by Rs 3. Other CTC brokens and fannings were up by Rs 2. On the average, plain dusts got Rs 36 a kg while the better ones, Rs 42. Plain leaf grades got Rs 32 while the better ones, Rs 42.
