Hyderabad , July 27

RICE researchers, traders, policy makers and implementing agencies will gather in New Delhi on July 28 for two days to discuss strategies to sustain India's position as the second largest rice exporter.

Organised by the Directorate of Rice Research, Hyderabad (DRR), and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), the symposium will focus on `Strategies for enhancing the export of quality rice', according to Dr B. Mishra, Project Director of DRR.

India earned Rs 2,063 crore as foreign exchange exporting 710,290 tonnes of premium basmati rice during 2002-03. Similarly, it exported 4.4 million tonnes of non-basmati rice worth Rs 3,800 crore during the same period to emerge as the second largest exporter, Dr Mishra said in a press release here.

The symposium, to be held at the National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources in Delhi, will have participants from the Agricultural Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, Export Inspection Council and Ministry of Commerce and the All India Rice Exporters Association.
