GTB fiasco

Banks have not changed with the times. They still rely heavily on the old lending model of agriculture, industry and services.

Though services constitute the bulk of the economy, it does not receive much credit from the banks.

Since there are no prudent guidelines to lend to the services sector, and the uncertainties associated with agriculture lending, banks find it easy to invest in government Securities — funding the fiscal profligacy of the government or resort to highrisk investments in stock markets (such as GTB).

There is an immediate need to revisit the lending mechanisms of the banks.
