Connectivity theory

This is with reference to "Not enough done for economic growth: Thai PM" (Business Line, August 1). The lamentation of Mr Thaksin Shinawatra, the Prime Minister of Thailand and the host of BIMSTEC, that the performance of the seven participant nations has not been among the top ranks of the world is very well supported by the comments of Dr Manmohan Singh that even the road connectivity among the regions is poor.

He mooted a highway connecting India, Myanmar and Thailand along with an optical fibre link. His assertive stand towards the need of security and law and order to sustain economic development assumes more significance as along with ensuring the connectivity, the security aspects are to be put on high alert by all the seven nations.

It is also significant that the leaders of the organisation have decided to extend the scope of the union beyond trade and economy.
