Right of recall

This is with reference to "Recall provision: People's leash, short and tight" (Business Line, August 3). Though the provision to recall elected representatives is desirable, it is too early to hope for such activism.

Most of the developing countries, having suffered some form of colonial or other exploitation, are undergoing the process of social change and nation-building. At present, many of our voters are illiterate and most are still too inexperienced in democratic methods to adapt to the process of recall, which needs to be based on large-scale rational decisions to be effective.
