Our Bureau

Hyderabad , Aug 4

HYDERABAD will be the venue for the big announcement of the Right Livelihood Awards, also known as the Alternative Nobel Prize, for selecting the winners for 2004.

Mr Baron Jakob Von Uexkull, Chairman of the international Jury, will unveil the winners on September 20. This will be the first time that the Jury is meeting outside Sweden, where the award was founded 25 years ago, according to a press release from Thinksoft Consultants, which is co-ordinating the organisation part.

The Jury will meet at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB). It will be followed on September 15-16 by a symposium on "Millennial reflections on right livelihood alternatives for the 21st century". The Swedish Ambassador to India would be the chief guest.

The Right Livelihood Awards are presented from the Swedish Houses of Parliament during December. They recognise community level contributions in development, human rights, ecology, renewable energy and gender empowerment.

Among the participants in the symposium would be the South Asian award winners like Ms Ela Bhatt of SEWA; Ms Medha Patkar of Narmada Bachao Andolan; Mr Sunderlal Bahaguna of Chipko movement, and Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury of Bangladesh.

Dr Vithal Rajan, former Executive Director of the Award and long-standing Jury member would be hosting the meeting in Hyderabad.
