Chennai , Aug. 6

THE US-based Silicon Graphics Inc is increasing its presence in India for its high performance computing products. It has appointed Redington (India) Ltd as a national distributor to distribute supercomputers, workstations, virtualisation systems and storage solutions portfolio.

This is for the first time, globally, that the company has a distributor on a national level for high-power super computing (HPSC), said the Senior Vice-President, Mr Bill La Rosa.

The relationship would help SGI increase its presence in the country's deeper markets, and also help it increase revenue by about 5 per cent in the next couple of years, he told presspersons without giving any financial details.

For the $950-million firm, about 15 per cent of revenue comes from Asia-Pacific, including Japan, China and India. However, revenue from India is only a portion of the 15 per cent.

Dr Prasad Medury, Managing Director, SGI India, said the relationship would initially target companies in science and manufacturing market segments, with a primary focus on applications in CAD (computer aided design), CAM (computer aided manufacturing), engineering and bioinformatics.

The global market for HPSC was around $10 billion, and in India it was about $200 million, he said.Mr J.S. Kulkarni, CEO, Redington, said that through the alliance the company offered its channel partners an opportunity to address a new segment of the market, and also help SGI to expand its reach in India. Redington, which has sales offices in 32 Indian cities, would have a dedicated team to market SGI's products, he said.
