Hyderabad , Aug. 9

A Village Information Technology (IT) Centre, to apply the resources of the Web and bring latest technologies to the farmers at a faster and cheaper rate, has been established at Gummadidala in Medak District of Andhra Pradesh.

The Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), Hyderabad has provided the knowhow, while the Andhra Pradesh Federation of Farmers Association (APFFA), will take care of the functional activities. Called Samadhan Kendras or Village Information Centres, the project is expected to provide a range of information useful to the farmers on a day-to-day basis, according to Dr J.S. Yadav, Director IICT.

Expert guidance on issues such as crop planning, managing pests, animal husbandry, installing hand pumps and repairs, bank loan procedures, land records and job opportunities are expected to be available at the click of the button at these Kendras.

The Union Ministry of Information Technology (MIT) has initiated the national project of developing these Kendras. As a pilot, three places in India, including IICT, have been identified, he told Business Line.

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has under its Rural Action Plan, sanctioned the proposal for implementation of the Samadhan Kendra through the APFFA, Hyderabad. Four districts of Telangana — Nalgonda, Warangal, Mahaboobnagar and Medak have been selected initially, he said.

Mahabubabad in Warangal District will soon have the second Kendra. The APFFA has plans to start nearly 400 such Kendra's throughout the State.

In addition to APFFA, Ministry of Agriculture, IT Sector of the State Government as well as MANAGE, have show interest on a specially designed software by the IICT to disseminate important information to the farmers, explained Dr U.S.N. Murthy, who heads the bioinformatics division.
