Farm fair from Aug 20 in Coimbatore

AGRI Intex 2004 — the fifth edition in the agriculture trade fair series organised by the Coimbatore District Small Industries' Association (Codissia) is slated between August 20 and 25 at the Codissia Trade Fair complex in the city.

This annual event conducted with the support extended by the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) is aimed at upgrading the economic status of farmers by creating awareness about the latest trends in farm practices, spreading information on the scope of food processing industry and for enlightening them about the credit and technical support facilities available.

The Chairman of Agri Intex 2004, Mr. V. Ranganathan, told presspersons that stall bookings had commenced and there was an overwhelming response from the participants. "We are planning to limit the number of stalls to at 250, as in the earlier year."

While stating that the CFTRI (Central Food Technological Research Institute), Mysore, and DFRL (Defence Food Research Laboratory) had confirmed their participation, Mr Ranganathan hinted about a possible collaboration with the former for setting up of an R&D facility at Coimbatore.

"It is still in the conceptual stage,'' he said when asked for more details about the proposed tie-up.

Codissia, however, has estimated the project outlay for the establishment of a research laboratory here at Rs 50 lakh.

The association, he said, was also interested in promoting a food park to enable entrepreneurs establish unit, considering the potential for such ventures.
