Bengal urged to push Centre for repeal of Electricity Act

DISTINGUISHED citizens and intellectuals in the city have urged the West Bengal Government to address the Union Government for the repeal of "The Electricity Act, 2003" after they forestalled the power tariff hike announced by the State Electricity Regulatory Commission (SERC) by invoking Section 108 of the Act, 2003.
According to the All Bengal Electricity Consumers' Association, the aggrieved persons advocated that the tariff of electricity should not be hiked based on the tariff revision method followed by SERC. They held that a dreaded fallout awaited the consumers of local utilities such as the CESC and the West Bengal State Electricity Board (WBSEB), since it had been made known that further hike, in respect of tariff, for Rs 373 crore would be thrust upon the consumers in no time.
They were dismayed that the State Government was increasing the numbers of the monthly instalments for payment of arrears instead of trying to stall the effect of the enhanced tariff and withdraw the arrears.
It was pointed out that tariff hike and accumulation of arrears, on the pretext of doing away with the so-called cross-subsidy, would put people of low-income groups in the State in a pecuniary constraint and mass-scale discontentment would be the fallout.
