Agricultural Policy Cauvery Delta farmers unhappy over MSP Our Correspondent
Madurai , Aug. 12 FARMER associations in the Cauvery Delta Area are unhappy over the minimum support price (MSP) for paddy, announced by the Centre recently. The hike is viewed as unfriendly to the farmers. The MSP announced by the Government for the common variety at Rs 560 per quintal for karif season carries a hike of Rs 10. The Grade A variety has been fixed at Rs 590. The farmers have been asking for Rs 750 per quintal together with a hike in incidental charges. Over the years, the cultivations costs have gone up substantially with an increase in input costs and labour charges the farmers might even give up paddy cultivation once and for all. While, according to the Secretary of the Cauvery Delta Farmers Welfare Association, Mr S. Renganatha, the farmers are `least enthused' at the hike, the President of the Tiruchi District Cauvery Delta Farmers Association, Mr G. Kanagasabai, has called for a review of the decision. The State Secretary of the Tamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam, Mr R. Raja Chidambaram, has called for a substantial increase in MSP. The State General Secretary of the Bharathiya Kisan Sangh, Mr P. Ayyakannu, has expressed the intention to move the High Court seeking remunerative prices. The CPI-affiliated Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam's District President, Mr T. Indrajit, while expressing that the hike is not adequate, has observed that the input costs were bound to be high for farmers taking up the cultivation after a long gap, according to sources.
