TAKING a cue from Tamil Nadu's initiatives in desalination programme, the Andhra Pradesh Government is working on a project to take up desalination works in the State.
Addressing a workshop here on Thursday, Mr Mulinti Mareppa, Minister for Lift Irrigation and Rain shadow Area Development, said the Government was keen to address the problems of dry-land farmers.
Incidentally, the Union Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation Ministry wrote letters to Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Orissa Government asking them to explore plans to set up desalination plants to attend to the needs of towns and cities along the coast.
The Minister asked the officials of Andhra Pradesh State Irrigation Development Corporation (APSIDC) to come out with an action plan to provide irrigation facilities.
That the Government created a separate Ministry for the purpose showed the importance given to this segment. He, however, criticised officials trying to hide facts. "There are some sick lift irrigation schemes. Yet, officials would give a positive picture," the Minister said.
He said the Chief Minister had convened a meeting with Corporation officials to discuss the issues that dogged the farmers in dry-land areas. He felt that farmers nearer to water sources could get water using lift irrigation means.
The workshop was organised by the corporation to showcase its vision for the year. The Corporation slated works worth Rs 196.54 crore for the year. This includes Rs 107.5 crore from National Bank for Agricultural and Rural Development.
