Salem Steel TUs thank Centre for dropping divestment plan

G. Gurumurthy

Coimbatore , Aug. 13

THE Save Salem Steel Committee, the umbrella forum of Salem Steel Employees unions, has expressed happiness over the recent statement of the Union Steel Minister, Mr Ramvilas Paswan, that the Centre has dropped the proposed privatisation of the Salem Steel Plant.

The Minister's announcement has ended the four years of uncertainty among the Salem Steel Plant employees, the panel said.

The committee, in a communication, said that in the wake of privatisation threat, about 300 staff of the Salem Steel Plant had left services under the voluntary retirement scheme. But despite the adverse environment and crisis-ridden days, the SSP workers put together their efforts ensure that the plant posted profits last year.

The committee expressed its gratitude to the United Progressive Front Government at the Centre and various political parties including the Tamil Nadu Government for coming to the rescue of the SSP workers in their struggle against the move made in the previous BJP-led NDA Government to privatise the Salem Plant.

In the meantime, the CITU-affiliated steel plant employees union has urged the Centre to bring in an investment of Rs 250 crore to Rs 300 crore needed for setting up a steel melting shop at SSP to enable the plant's sustained operation. It also wanted the Government to fill the vacancies arising on account of 300 staff and officials opting VRS in recent years.
