Srisailam reservoir receiving heavy inflows

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , Aug. 16

THE Srisailam reservoir in Andhra Pradesh is receiving heavy inflows of over 2 lakh cusecs per day. Thanks to the unabated floods in the upper reaches of the River Krishna, the water level in the dam reached the mark of 874 feet on Monday as against the full reservoir level (FRL) of 885 feet.

Following this, the State Government has issued instructions to the dam authorities to open the floodgates once the water level reached 875 ft, leaving a cushion of 10 ft for the dam to absorb further floods during the season.

This apart, the two hydel power stations located on the right and left bank of the dam are being run to their full capacities of 770 MW and 900 MW respectively.

According to the Irrigation Principal Secretary, Mr C.V.S.K. Sarma, the outflow from Srisailam through power generation was 65,000 cusecs that was being used to build up the water storage level in the downstream Nagarjunasagar dam.

The water level in Nagarjunasagar touched 502 feet as against the FRL of 590 ft.

He said that the State Government was considering opening of Nagarjunasagar canals once the water level touched 510 ft.
