3-day convention on jewellery evolution

THE Crafts Council of India (CCI) is organising a three-day international jewellery convention called "Grass to Gold" in association with the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles.

Ms Usha Krishna, Chairperson, Convention Committee, said that the convention would highlight the evolution of jewellery from countries that form the Asia Pacific region of the World Crafts Council.

Mr Vijaya Rajan, Chairperson, Crafts Council of India, said that the convention would showcase the best jewellery traditions, both conventional and non-conventional.

Mr P. Sundaramurthi, Regional Director with the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, said that in 2003-04 India exported Rs 138.79 crore worth of imitation jewellery (non-precious jewellery).

The Government had adopted the cluster approach to develop this segment and had conducted a number of design and marketing workshops for them, he said. .
