Thiruvananthapuram , Aug. 20

THE public sector Kerala State Electronics Development Corporation (Keltron), which has diversified into IT education area, is launching a new seven-month multi-media expert programme.

The course is designed to develop personnel proficient in 3D graphics and animation, CD authoring and print and publication designing, according to Mr V. Ramkumar, Managing Director, Keltron.

A major attraction of the course is that the first 100 students joining the programme will be given a Keltron computer each free of cost. Besides, the students will also be given digital learning content.

Another feature of the programme is that the students will be provided free intranet access for five years to stay connected to the centre as well as the faculty. The course fee is fixed at Rs 50,000.

Mr Ramkumar said studies had shown that the industry requires specialists rather than generalists. Keltron's objective was to create employable specialists in the animation area, he added. The new course will be offered at all the three animation campuses of Keltron in Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam and Kozhikode.

Mr Ramkumar informed that Keltron is constantly on the look out for new avenues in the field of IT education. The company had chosen IT as one of the thrust areas and in 2003-04, it accounted for as much as 60 per cent of the Keltron's total turnover of Rs 85 crore. Of this, IT education brought in around Rs 2 crore, he said.

Keltron is providing IT and technical training at 25 centres spread across the State. Some of the courses offered are in middleware technologies, web technologies, Linus and networking, diploma in tool and die making and power electronics.
