New Delhi , Aug. 20

AMID surging international oil prices, the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, on Friday said that efforts would be reduce reliance on crude oil by tapping the potential offered by renewable energy sources like hydro, biomass and solar energy.

Dr Singh said that steps must be taken to decentralise power production by encouraging localised energy production at the village level.

He was speaking at a function organised by the Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy sources to mark the release of a postage stamp commemorating the 60th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi.

The Prime Minister said that steps are being taken to substitute diesel with bio fuel in tractors and pumps for agriculture.

``We must immediately take stock of what we have achieved in tapping other sources of energy and what is available elsewhere. The gap must be bridged. The time has come to focus attention on alternate to crude oil.''

Dr Singh said that crude oil as a resource was depleting fast globally and therefore, a shift may be required to alternative sources by adopting the latest technology.
