Education Essay contest for students on computer study Our Bureau
Chennai , Aug. 23 THE Tamil Nadu Government will organise a national level essay competition on computer education to create awareness among students and teachers on the need for computer education in schools. The competition will coincide with Connect2004, the State's information, communication and technology show to be held between September 22 and 25. Tamil Nadu's Information Technology Secretary, Mr Vivek Harinarain, told presspersons here that the competition is a first-of-its-kind initiative by the State Government, and is open to all schools across the country. "We hope this would usher in a digital revolution in the young minds," he said. The competition will have students from 8th to 10th standards writing on the topic, `The need for computer education in my life' and students from 11th and 12th standard on the topic `Computer education future scenario.' The language for the competition would be English, and entries should not exceed 300 words, he said. According to Mr Sudeep Jain, Managing Director, Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (Elcot), 15,000 to 20,000 entries are expected to come from 1,500 schools across 500 plus districts. There will be three awards - the first is a laptop computer, the second is a personal computer and third is a PDA (personal digital assistant, which is a handheld device that combines computing, telephone/fax, Internet and networking features). In the first level, about 1,000 best entries will be filtered by a panel of teachers, and in the second level, the 100 best entries will be selected by a panel of college professors. A panel of IT experts will select the final three entries, he said. The last date for the entries would be September 10, and the entries have to be sent to Elcot, says a release.
