MANGALORE: Excessive use of plastic materials, fertilisers and pesticides by human beings is the main reason for sea pollution. This has caused innumerable damage to the marine environment, according to Dr N.A. Madhyastha, former principal of Poorna Prajna College, Udupi. He was speaking at the world environment day celebrations in Mangalore on Monday.

More than 75 mega cities in the world are situated along the coast, and pollution is on the rise in these cities and the coastline adjoining them, he added.

The Technical Officer of the Coast Guard District Headquarters No. 3, Mr K.J. Dua, said that the coast guard would take up a beach cleaning operation along the Karnataka coast on September 18 and September 19.
