Truckers' stir: Toyota, Honda to review situation

Our Bureau

Bangalore , Aug. 23

MAJOR auto companies including Toyota-Kirloskar Motor Company and Honda Siel said on Monday that they will review the situation if the truckers' strike continues for a few more days.

A Toyota official said that the company, which follows the just-in-time production system, had taken precautions in view of the strike by stocking enough materials but if the strike continues for some more days, it could face problems.

Last year, Toyota was forced to halt production because of the truckers' strike. The strike went for 14 days .

Ford and Hyundai too were affected by the strike at that time, while two-wheeler makers, Kinetic Engineering and TVS Motor Company closed their factories as the strike crippled the delivery of components.

The truckers represented by All-India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) went on strike last week against the mode of collection of service tax. They want the sales tax/the excise department to be made the collecting agents for service tax instead of making transporters the agents.

In April, last year, truckers went on strike against the frequent rise in diesel, plan to introduce Value Added Tax and a move to scrap 15-year-old trucks from plying on roads.
