CII to organise Tele Trans expo

Chennai , Aug. 23

`TELE Trans 2004', a conference-cum-exposition on `telematics in transportation' will be held in Chennai on September 6 and 7. The event is being organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry.

The conference, the second in the proposed series of five, will focus on how best to bring about the use of electronics and communications into the automotive sector so that all the stakeholders are benefited. For example, if a car could be linked up with the police and hospitals, help could be secured in a short time if there is an accident. Similarly, toll collection could be automated.

At a press conference here, the organisers observed that telematics had made significant inroads into the automotive industry over the last decade. There have been electronic ignition, engine management systems, remote diagnostic systems, in-vehicle navigation systems using geo-positioning systems and internet-based entertainment and information delivery systems.

At the next level, there are inter-vehicle communication systems to co-ordinate vehicle movement during busy periods particularly in the metropolitan areas. At a still higher level, there is a whole range of telematics-based support systems including two-way communication with healthcare support, law enforcement authorities and insurance systems.

"The whole gamut of `in-vehicle telematics', `inter-vehicle telematics' and `vehicle to the world of telematics' constitute billions and billions of business," officials said.

Tele Trans 2004 would focus on the technologies, their application and their benefits.

Key speakers include Mr R. Seshasayee, Managing Director, Ashok Leyland; Mr Jagdish Khattar, President, SIAM and Managing Director, Maruti Udyog Ltd; Dr R. Chidambaram, Principal Scientific Advisor, Government of India; Mr Ananth Koppar, President, MphasiS Technologies; Mr R. Ramanan, Managing Director & CEO, CMC Ltd; and Mr Hans-Joachim Schade, Head of Business Development, Intelligent Telematics Solutions, Siemens Telematics, Germany.
