Trade & Labour Unions Bank strike in Kerala total; unions claim success Our Bureau
Kochi , Aug. 24 THE strike by bank employees and officers called by the United Forum of Bank Unions on Tuesday, demanding implementation of wage reforms was total in the State, according to Mr V.K. Prasad, State Convenor of UFBU. He said in a release that the unions have resorted to agitation because of the stalemate in finalising the wage settlement, which expired in October 2002. A release from All Kerala Bank Employees Federation said that the functioning of more than 3,500 branches, clearing houses, foreign exchange, departments and administrative offices came to a standstill on account of the token strike. Mr V.J. Johny, General Secretary of the Federation, said the bank unions would meet tomorrow to chalk out further programmes opposing unfettered technology, outsourcing and illegal transfers. The striking employees and officers took out processions and held protest meetings before the bank branches. In Kochi, the meeting was conducted in front of SBT, MG Road branch. Union sources claimed the strike also affected the regional office of the RBI in Thiruvananthapuram. However, the new generation banks such as ICICI, HDFC, UTI and IDBI worked as usual.
