Railways freight earnings up 9.5%

THE Indian Railways earned Rs 9618.34 crore from 190.9 million tonnes (mt) of revenue freight during April to July 2004, against Rs 8780.45 crore from 178.63 mt of such traffic in the year-ago period - an increase of 9.54 per cent.

Of the total earnings, Rs 4120.38 crore came from transportation of 86.62 mt of coal, followed by Rs 355.26 crore from 13.32 mt of raw material to steel plants, Rs 446.30 crore from 4.28 mt of finished steel from steel plants and Rs 417.80 crore from 11.08 mt of iron ore for exports, an official release said here.
