Thiruvananthapuram , Aug. 29

THE Kerala Chief Minister, Mr A.K. Antony, has put in his papers after having been in power for three years.

The Chief Minister met the Governor, Mr R.L. Bhatia, at 8 p.m. on Sunday to submit his resignation.

Earlier, Mr Antony made a surprise announcement to this effect to waiting newspersons at the Thiruvananthapuram airport after seeing off the President of the All-India Congress Committee (AICC) President, Ms Sonia Gandhi. He had held discussions with Ms Gandhi, who was on her way back to New Delhi after attending a public function at neighbouring Kollam.

Mr Antony said the AICC President had given him the nod to resign in response to his specific request. However, the Chief Minister said he would continue to hold the post till the party high command took a decision on the successor. The Congress Legislative Party would hold a meeting on Monday to elect a new leader, he added.
