ABOUT 2,000 small and medium bakeries in the city will increase pav/slice bread prices by 25 per cent with effect from September 11, 2004 following increase in major raw materials prices - maida, according to a joint statement issued by the Bombay Bakers' Association (BBA) and India Bakers' Association (IBA) o Monday.
Pav/bread prices in the city will be increased from 0.75 paise to Re 1 per piece, while bread prices will be around Rs 11 for 400-gram pack as against current price of Rs 9 and Rs 22 for 800-gram pack as against 18 per pack from September 11.
"We foresee increase of 25 per cent in the price of pav and bread, if the Governments both - State and Centre - do not act immediately to increase supply of wheat to bakeries at the rate of Rs 740 per quintal," Mr K.P. Irani, president of IBA said.
"Maida prices increased by about Rs 200 at Rs 1,075 per bag of 90 kg in the last two months due to non-availability of assured supply of wheat from Food Corporation of India (FCI).
Current price of wheat in the open market also risen by over Rs 100 per quintal in one month. Wheat prices have shown sharp increase due to the non-functioning of the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS) of FCI," he said.
"We need monthly supply of about 60,000 tonnes wheat for our consumption," Mr M. Izhar, secretary of BBA said.
