Small-scale sector

"The small-scale industry is and must be regarded as an engine of growth," says the CMP. The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh's promises while addressing the golden jubilee celebrations of the Small Industries Development Organisation have raised hopes that the sector, which provides employment to a large number of people, will be helped to rejuvenate itself and flourish.

A "Single law soon for SSIs" (Business Line, August 31) reports that the inspector raj may go and a National Commission will be set up to examine the problems facing enterprises in the unorganised, informal sector. This is a welcome move.

Capital support, innovation, upgradation of technology and making them globally competitive are critical. And a "new organisational and institutional mechanism to facilitate their healthy growth" may be necessary.
