Aquaculture Logistics - Shipping `Ship-breaking units will hurt shrimp hatcheries' Our Bureau
Kakinada , Sept. 6 THE proposed ship-breaking units along the Kakinada coast will cause great harm to the ecological balance in the region and affect fisheries adversely, according to the AP Shrimp Hatcheries' Association. In separate statements sent to the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister, the association said the hazardous wastes and heavy metals generated in ship-breaking would sully the sea waters. It would not only harm thousands of traditional fishermen in the coastal villages, but affect the livelihood of over 7,000 aqua farmers and workers. There would also be heavy displacement. Stating that there are over two lakh shrimp farmers in the two Godavari districts and Krishna, the association said the required seed is being produced by 80 hatcheries located in the Thondangi and Kothapalli mandals in East Godavari district along the coast. Ship-breaking would jeopardise these hatcheries and affect seed production. It would have a direct bearing on the shrimp exports from the State and therefore the move should be given up, the association pleaded.
