Banks' consolidation

This is with reference to "RBI favours old pvt banks consolidation" (Business Line, September 9). The merger issue needs to be taken up with greater urgency. This will add strength to the banking industry. The Deputy Governor has referred to the need for "consolidated supervision". For a long time, the pros and cons of a unified regulatory system to cater to the emergence of financial conglomerates has been debated. It is now for the Government to take a final view in the matter and stop the creation of fragmented regulators.
