`Competition will spur Maruti to perform better'

Ch. R.S. Sarma

Visakhapatnam , Sept. 9

MARUTI Udyog Ltd welcomes competition and is quite capable of holding its own in the Indian market in spite of the entry of several new players, Mr Kinji Saito, Director (Marketing & Sales), has said.

Mr Saito, who was here to open a new service centre of a local dealer, Varun Motors, told Business Line that competition would spur Maruti to perform better and give the customer the best "in terms of pricing, service and quality.''

Though Maruti had lost some market share after the entry of several companies, he said, it was still far ahead of others in terms of sales volume, dealer network and knowledge of Indian conditions.

``We were the first to arrive in India and are still the best even in a competitive market. We intend to stay that way,'' he said, and added that sales volume had risen by 20 per cent during the five months of the current financial year. He does not foresee any negative factors for the rest of the year.

He said Maruti was exporting more than 50,000 cars to the quality-conscious European markets and "in those markets Maruti products coming from India are recognised to be on a par with those of Suzuki from Japan. We had to traverse a long way to arrive at the point.''
