Outlook Money & Banking - General Insurance Aviva sale may open up Japan market for Wipro Abhrajit Gangopadhyay
Bangalore , Sept. 10 WIPRO Ltd is likely to pursue a new opportunity to grow its technology arm's insurance practice in Japan following its client Aviva's decision to sell off its Asian general insurance business to Mitsui Sumitomo. Wipro Technologies that counts Aviva as its client will not be "materially impacted" by the sell-off decision, the Vice-President (Insurance solutions), Mr Soumitro Ghosh, said. "This gives us an opportunity to foray into Japanese market and we could tap Sumitomo for business," Mr Ghosh said. Wipro signed up Aviva in February this year to provide IT services. Most of the work that Wipro does for Aviva is from Aviva UK and some from Aviva Canada. Close to 150 people work on the Aviva account and the engagement is "only likely to grow" going forward, Mr Ghosh said. Wipro is bullish on the insurance practice that contributed close to 10 per cent to its revenue. Mr Ghosh feels that there is "huge scope" for bundling business process outsourcing offering with its insurance services as currently only one of its 15 insurance clients engages in BPO efforts with Wipro. Insurers spend lots in back office operations towards life and property insurance, Mr Ghosh said, adding that there was enough opportunity for Wipro to cash on these BPO functions. Mr Ghosh, who was upbeat on accounts like Prudential Plc and a Zurich subsidiary, said that Wipro's insurance practice would outpace industry growth in the current fiscal.
